ODTC SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM 2006    WAS A HIT!

We did learn a lot. The seven week program provided opportunities for exploratory learning across a spectrum of topics.

Sensory Celebration Week – We kicked off our theme, Sensory Summer.  Students used their senses to explore summer fun through fine and gross motor activities and cooperative play.  On June 27th students participated in a carnival on the ODTC campus with treats, carnival games and prizes!

Sensory Outdoors Week – Students explored the world with a focus on outdoor activities and environmental education.  On July 11th students marched in a parade on the ODTC campus.  On the 12th and 13th classes went to Ottawa State Park for environmental science and outdoor recreation activities.

Sensible Safety Week – Students enjoyed summer fun with a focus on safety.  On July 18th students explored the Fire Safety House on Wheels to learn how to safely avoid the dangers of fire in the home.  Local firefighters were on hand to demonstrate safety techniques and answer lots of questions.

Taste of Summer Week – Students enjoyed the tastes of summer while they experienced foods, flavors and fun.  With help from staff members students prepared and sampled a variety of summer treats.  On July 25th there was a Kool-Aid tasting where everyone will got to sample and vote for their favorite flavor.  Students analyzed and displayed the data they collected.  Fruit punch was a standout favorite.

Wonderful Wheels Week – Students had a “sensory motor” experience while they learned about all kinds of wheeled vehicles.   Throughout the week students built models, raced toy cars and studied the science of motion.  On August 3rd there was a Wonderful Wheels Show on the ODTC campus where students got to see and touch a variety of cars, trucks, motorcycles and work vehicles.

Sensational Summer Week– We were blessed with wonderful weather so students were able to participate in water activities and enjoy other outdoor seasonal fun.   On August 8th we had a splash-tastic celebration of water games here on the ODTC campus.  Everyone got wet and everyone had fun.

Colors of Summer Week – Students explored color, art media and fun through 2- and 3- dimensional art projects.  On August 15th we had an art show featuring the student artwork that was done at ODTC throughout our summer program.  Family and friends were invited to attend the art show which was held on the ODTC campus in the historic Pabst Mansion.

Our summer program was such a success that we were sorry to see it end.  But there’s bound to be more fun and learning ahead through the seasons of fall, winter and spring.  We will keep you posted.
